Artificial insemination is a more clean and safe way to breed dogs, dogs can catch all types of disease and infections from each other by doing natural mating and unless the stud dog is one of your own e.g. your pet, you will have no idea how many bitches the stud has serviced and where these bitches have been or if they have been kept in good or bad conditions. Artificial insemination makes sure the sperm goes straight to the cervix and is absorb by the bitch within in days of being syringed into her by a catheter.
When dogs are mated naturally it can take up to 7 days for it to swim down to the bitch’s cervix and a lot of the sperm won’t make it as it will die off on the way. When doing artificial insemination, we tease the male with the female in front of him and then collect his sperm.
There are three parts to a stud ejaculation the first part is called pre sperm this is clear and just clears any bacteria that may be in the dog’s penis. The second part is called Sperm rich this is the sperm we need which will fertilise the bitch’s eggs. The third part contains prostatic fluid this is usually clear like the first part we do not use these as it does not carry vital sperm to fertilise the bitch’s eggs.
Once the stud has ejaculated the three parts we syringe the Rich sperm into a syringe and attach a catheter and we will insert the catheter into the bitch with lubricant and syringe the rich sperm into the neck of the cervix and then remove the catheter. With gloves on we use our thumb to touch the feather inside the bitch this makes the bitch contract naturally like she would with the stud was on top of her and draws the sperm to her eggs, this is only done for a few minutes and we advise after to avoid baths for 5 days and also not to let her have a wee up to 1 hour later.

Progesterone testing is more and more popular these days due to dogs only usually having seasons every six months. We analysis your dogs’ blood through one of our progesterone testing machines usual between 7 to 10 days into their season. We usually only do this once but if your female is a late ovulation then sometimes, we may have to ask you to come back a few days later to retake the test. Once your female bloods reach 20 nmols then she has released her eggs and we can give you a 3-day window slot to mate her in.
We also offer Artificial insemination so we can get the sperm straight to her cervix and fertilise the eggs quicker and more accurate than natural mating.
This is done in the last week of pregnancy this test is to show how fare the bitch is off to delivering a lot of breeders do this test so they know when the bitch is due to give birth and keep a close eye on her and also so they can book there bitch in for a cesarean in advance the bitch needs to be below 10 nmols to be booked in for a cesarean as doing it before then can prevent the babies from surviving has they will be born to early.
This can only be done 32 days from her last mating as any time before then we will not be able to identify any gestation sac and confirm if the bitch is pregnant or not.
